Maureen McClusky celebrated a remarkable personal milestone in December, turning 100 years old while receiving care at the Moya Cole Hospice ward. Surrounded by her loving family and close friends, Maureen enjoyed a heartfelt celebration marking the centennial anniversary of her birth.
A Milestone Celebration
Speaking just before her birthday, Maureen shared her philosophical perspective on reaching this significant age. "Turning 100, it's one of those things - you either do it or you don't," she reflected. "There have been times where I've felt I wouldn't make it and I've come out the other side." Despite the milestone, Maureen maintained that she sees turning 100 like any other birthday, though she particularly enjoyed spending quality time with her loved ones during the celebration.
Friendship and Support
During her conversation with hospice staff, Maureen was visited by her friend Louise, who spoke warmly about their long-standing friendship. "Maureen has been such a lovely friend to so many people that now they want to wish her well," Louise said. "Her family are always here for her. She loves to help people, she loves to listen. Every Sunday afternoon we get together where we've spent many a time on her sofa having a laugh."
Exceptional Care Experience
Maureen expressed deep appreciation for the care she receives at Moya Cole Hospice, stating emphatically: "You can't say a wrong word about the care. Everyone is so pleased to be here and to do what they are doing. They're all young and yet the nurses want to give their time up to help the elderly people."
Louise confirmed Maureen's positive experience, adding: "I've come in twice to see Maureen since she's been in and the staff are just wonderful. Everybody has been very kind and attentive. They explain everything to her which is really important. They talk her through what they're going to do and why they are going to do it."
Royal Recognition
To mark her special birthday, Maureen received a congratulatory card from King Charles and a blessing from Pope Leo XIV, adding royal and spiritual recognition to her personal celebration.
