Ashtead Care Agency Celebrates Centenary of Bletchley Park Codebreaker Miriam
Ashtead Agency Celebrates 100th Birthday of Codebreaker

A local care agency in Ashtead has marked a very special milestone, celebrating the 100th birthday of one of its longest-supported service users and recognising her extraordinary contribution to Britain's wartime history.

A Century of Life and Service

Miriam celebrated her 100th birthday on Thursday, June 11, with carers and loved ones gathering at her home for an intimate celebration to honour the occasion. Staff from the agency, who have had the privilege of supporting Miriam for many years, described it as a 'wonderful day' and a chance to celebrate a truly remarkable life.

Bletchley Park Heroine

What makes Miriam's story particularly unique is her role in one of Britain's most important wartime operations. She is officially listed on the Bletchley Park Roll of Honour, which recognises the men and women who worked in signals intelligence during the Second World War. Bletchley Park, the secret codebreaking centre that played a vital role in helping the Allies secure victory, was responsible for intercepting and deciphering enemy communications.

Miriam joined the operation when she was just 14 years old, becoming part of a highly secretive effort that remained classified for decades after the war. Despite the secrecy that surrounded her work for many years, Miriam has always remained immensely proud of her service and enjoys sharing some of her fascinating memories and stories from her time at Bletchley Park.

Honouring a Quiet Hero

Although she is now too frail to attend the annual Veterans' Reunion held to honour former codebreakers, her contribution remains an important part of Britain's history and a source of great pride for those who know and care for her.

A spokesperson for the Ashtead-based care agency said: "It has been a privilege to support Miriam over many years and to celebrate such a significant milestone with her. Reaching 100 years old is an incredible achievement in itself, but to have played such an important role in Britain's wartime efforts makes her story even more extraordinary. We are honoured to have shared this special day with her."

As Miriam marked her centenary surrounded by those closest to her, there was not only a celebration of a life well lived, but also recognition of a quiet hero whose service helped shape the course of history.
