Crayola has been compelled to issue an urgent recall for two of its products after they were found to contain traces of asbestos. The affected items are the Crayola Discovery Craft Box and the Crayola Touchy Feely Craft Box, both of which have been removed from store shelves. These sand-based craft kits were discovered to have asbestos contamination.
Manufacturer Response
The Manchester-based manufacturer, Hunter Price, initiated the recall following the detection of asbestos. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has advised consumers to immediately stop using the products and keep them away from children. For those who still have the items in their original packaging, the recommendation is to place them in a heavy-duty plastic bag sealed with double tape.
Broader Recall Context
This year alone, over 100 toys have been recalled in the United Kingdom due to the presence of cancer-causing asbestos. Parents are being urged to check whether their children's toys appear on the OPSS recall list, which includes products from Smyths, Hunter Price, Hobbycraft, Argos, Tesco, Aldi, Home Bargains, Morrisons, Poundland, and TK Maxx.
Sue Davies, head of consumer protection policy at Which?, commented: "Seemingly innocent children's toys can have serious health consequences if there aren't proper checks to ensure they comply with safety laws."
