Cepen Lodge Care Home Celebrates Resident's 100th Birthday in Grand Style
Celebrations were in full swing at Cepen Lodge care home as resident Melvina Bawn marked her 100th birthday with a joyous party. The centenarian was joined by staff, relatives, friends, and fellow residents for a memorable day filled with special surprises and heartfelt tributes.
Royal Recognition and Heartwarming Tributes
Melvina received a birthday card from King Charles and Queen Camilla, acknowledging her landmark achievement. The festivities included live entertainment from Mini Concerts and a lavish buffet featuring savoury snacks, sweet treats, and fizz. Guests enjoyed a slice of a special birthday cake crafted and decorated by the home's activities co-ordinator, Anita.
Following a social media appeal by the care home, Melvina was overwhelmed to receive over 300 birthday cards from school children and strangers across the UK, all sending their best wishes. Additionally, she was gifted a 'Family History Binder' from Kirsty Gray, managing director of Family Wise Ltd, which detailed her family tree dating back to the 1700s.
A Life Well-Lived: Melvina's Journey
Born in Bristol, Melvina left school at 15 and spent her working life in various administrative roles, culminating in a position with The Royal Mail. In this role, she signed the Secrecy Act due to handling Home Office correspondence.
At 23, she married Len, a naval officer she met during an August Bank Holiday dance at Page Hall, where he 'cut-in' and became her dance partner for life. The couple were blessed with a daughter, Karen, who gave them a granddaughter, Jennifer. Jennifer is married to Stephen, and together they have provided Melvina with two great-grandchildren, Sienna and Harlow, who bring immense joy to her life.
Reflections on a Remarkable Celebration
Melvina shared her thoughts on the day, saying, "I thought my birthday would be a quiet affair, spent with my family, however Anita had other ideas." When asked about the celebration, she replied, "'Fantastic'—there's no other word for it."
