Popular Children's Toy Recalled Over High Asphyxiation Risk
The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has issued an urgent product recall for a popular children's toy, warning of a severe asphyxiation hazard. The recall targets Rainbow Mix Jelly Water Gel Beads, which were sold through the online marketplace Desertcart.
Immediate Safety Concerns
According to the official alert, the multicoloured water beads, packaged in a plastic bag shaped like a juice carton, present a high risk of asphyxiation. If swallowed in their hydrated form, the beads can block a young child's airway, leading to potentially life-threatening consequences.
The hazard statement explicitly notes that the product fails to meet the safety requirements outlined in the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. The item number associated with the Desertcart listing is 615019351.
Official Recommendations and Actions
The OPSS has strongly advised all consumers who possess this product to stop using it immediately. Owners are urged to contact the distributor from which the item was purchased to seek appropriate redress.
In response to the recall, Desertcart has removed the product listing from its online marketplace. The OPSS has published a detailed Product Safety Alert for water beads, which provides further information on the risks and regulatory actions.
This recall underscores the critical importance of vigilance regarding children's products and adherence to safety standards to prevent accidental injuries in the home.
