Dr Amir Khan has issued a warning about the timing of supplement intake, specifically advising against taking certain supplements with tea or coffee. The GP, known for appearances on Lorraine, This Morning, and Good Morning Britain, shared his insights on Instagram and TikTok.
Timing is everything
Dr Khan emphasised that timing can significantly affect how well the body absorbs and responds to supplements. He recommended starting the day with an iron tablet on an empty stomach, accompanied by vitamin C for enhanced absorption.
"Don't take that with tea or coffee or magnesium. That can reduce the absorption. Just a splash of water and some vitamin C - that's how you take your iron," he explained.
According to patient.info, orange juice is an excellent source of vitamin C that aids iron absorption.
Fat-soluble supplements with meals
After taking iron, Dr Khan advised consuming fat-soluble supplements with breakfast or lunch. These include vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids, and multivitamins containing vitamins A, D, E, and K.
"These are supplements that are absorbing the fat that you eat, and they absorb better," he said.
Evening supplements for sleep
For the evening, Dr Khan recommended magnesium, which can have a relaxing effect and promote sleep. He suggested taking it one to two hours before bed.
Finally, he noted that creatine can be taken at any time of day.
