The owner of a Rottweiler that was discovered with fatal stab wounds has described the heartbreaking final moments before her pet vanished, as an investigation into his death continues.
Bruce, a beloved family dog, was found dead under a bridge on Bosworth Drive in Chelmsley Wood, Solihull, on July 10. His body was discovered by a nurse walking her own dog, who noticed blood spots beneath the bridge and was led to Bruce's remains by her pet.
Investigation and Reward
West Midlands Police is supporting an investigation led by the RSPCA, while animal rights charity PETA has offered a £5,000 reward for information leading to the person responsible. The reward underscores the severity of the case and the public outcry over the dog's brutal death.
Bruce's owner, who chose to remain anonymous, recounted the distressing sequence of events to BirminghamLive. She explained that on the morning of his disappearance, Bruce woke her up needing to go into the back garden. After letting him out, she misplaced the back door key and decided to bring him through the front instead.
"I told him to sit and wait, which he did. I unlocked the gate and guided him through but, when I went to close the gate, he had reversed out from my grip and was off down the road within seconds," she said. "My front door was open and my children were still in bed, so I couldn't run after him. He was so fast."
Concerns Over Investigation
The owner expressed frustration over the handling of the case, noting that police initially decided not to investigate and left it to the RSPCA and Solihull Council. "To me, that's unreal, because surely a knife-wielding person is a police matter?" she said. However, West Midlands Police has since confirmed that officers are now supporting the RSPCA and council with their enquiries.
RSPCA investigators suspect that Bruce was killed elsewhere and his body was dumped beneath the bridge, as there was no trace of blood at the location where he was found. Lydia Andrews, an animal rescue officer at the charity, said in a previous appeal: "We don't believe the dog was killed at this location - so we're appealing for information to see if anyone saw someone in the area or who has any information about where the dog has come from, and how his body came to be discarded in this way."
Owner's Confusion and Hope
Bruce's owner said the RSPCA had reassured her they would "catch the culprit," but she was left confused by a subsequent letter stating that Bruce was not killed under the bridge. "I have tried to rack my brain as to why RSPCA would say that," she said, as she had presumed he was killed at the bridge after his escape.
In a new statement issued on Friday, the RSPCA confirmed they still believe Bruce was killed away from the location he was found. A spokesperson said: "Our heart goes out to the owner of the dog. This is an extremely distressing incident and one that no pet owner should ever have to go through and we have spoken to them as part of the investigation. We believe the dog was not killed in the location where he was found as there was no trace of blood in the area. We're still actively investigating the incident and would appeal for anyone with first-hand information about this incident to contact us."
Police Appeal for Information
West Midlands Police is now assisting the RSPCA-led investigation. A spokesperson said: "We're in contact with the RSPCA who are leading on the investigation. Officers are supporting their enquiries and will be speaking with the owner of the dog to establish the circumstances."
