Paralympic legend Ade Adepitan has officially opened a new sensory room at Fairfax Academy in Birmingham, a facility designed to support students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). The room, funded by the school's Parent Teacher Association and local donations, offers a calming environment with soft lighting, tactile panels, and interactive equipment.
Community Effort Brings Sensory Room to Life
The sensory room was created through a collaborative effort involving staff, parents, and the local community. Fairfax Academy headteacher Sarah Holmes said, "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to making this room a reality. It will make a huge difference to our students who need a quiet space to regulate their emotions."
The room features bubble tubes, fiber optic lights, and sound systems that can be adjusted to suit individual needs. It is available for use by all students, particularly those with autism, anxiety, or sensory processing challenges.
Ade Adepitan's Inspirational Visit
Ade Adepitan, a renowned wheelchair basketball player and television presenter, shared his own experiences with the students. "I know how important it is to have spaces where you feel safe and supported," he said. "This sensory room will help students focus, relax, and be the best they can be."
Adepitan also took part in a Q&A session with students, discussing his career and the importance of inclusivity in sports and education.
Impact on Student Wellbeing
The sensory room is already being used by students, with staff reporting positive feedback. One teacher noted that students who previously struggled to concentrate in class are now able to use the room to reset and return to learning more effectively. The school plans to integrate the room into its broader mental health and wellbeing strategy.
Fairfax Academy, located in Sutton Coldfield, has around 800 students. The sensory room is part of a wider investment in SEND provision, which includes training for staff and adapted teaching resources.
