Historic Halesowen Pub Set for Adult Care Centre Conversion
Historic Halesowen Pub to Become Adult Care Centre

A former historic pub in Halesowen could be transformed into a day centre and supported living accommodation for adults with learning difficulties. Dudley Council is reviewing a full planning application for the Olde Queen's Head on Birmingham Street, which closed in 2024.

500-Year-Old Building

According to the Campaign for Real Ale, an Old Queen's Head pub existed in Peckingham Street, Halesowen, from 1675, and the current building may also date back to the 17th century. A heritage statement accompanying the application, registered on June 10, emphasises careful preservation of the building's character and significance.

The statement notes: 'The proposals have been developed with careful regard to the character and significance of the existing building. The amount of development is limited to the reuse of the existing structure, with no extension or increase in footprint proposed. This ensures that the original form and scale of the building are preserved.'

Day Centre Plans

Council planners are being asked to approve a day centre on the ground floor for adults with learning difficulties, operated by Stepping Out & About Ltd, a Halesowen-based organisation established for 15 years. If approved, the centre would serve around 50 users and operate from 9am to 5pm.

The application also includes a commercial kitchen on the ground floor, operating separately for off-site consumption. A communal lounge on the ground floor would serve supported living residents on the first floor and be available for community groups during evenings and weekends.

Supported Living

The first floor would provide accommodation for three people, supported by a care worker during the evening. A statement supporting the application says: 'The proposed development represents a well-considered and sensitive scheme that successfully combines planning and heritage objectives. It secures the long-term future of a vacant building, preserves its character and contribution to the area, and delivers significant community benefits.'
