A planning application has been submitted to transform a large detached family home on Prospect Road in Moseley into residential accommodation for six adults with autism or learning difficulties. If approved, the property will be refurbished to enable up to six residents to live independently, with two carers providing support at any one time.
Proposed Care Arrangements
According to a supporting statement, staff would operate on a shift basis, with handovers scheduled at 8am and 10pm. The application emphasises that the activity at the home would be 'no different than a family of six or seven' going about their daily business. Each resident would have their own bedroom, and no one other than the residents would live at the property.
Support would be tailored to each occupant to gradually build their confidence and interpersonal skills. The statement notes that for the vast majority of the time, there would be very little externally perceptible activity associated with the property. Some comings and goings would occur at staff handover times, and residents would participate in social, recreational, and other outings, as expected in a residential setting.
Domestic Character Preserved
The application argues that this pattern of activity would not be materially different from what would be reasonably expected with a family of six or seven people carrying out day-to-day activities at the property. It highlights that the house was built as a family home, featuring six bedrooms and a generous private rear garden, and is currently occupied by a large family on that basis.
It is proposed that under the future use, the lived experience at the house would continue to be very much akin to a domestic shared house. The statement concludes that the residents would each have their own bedroom, and aside from the residents, no one else would live at the property.
Next Steps
The application will go before city council planners in the near future for a decision. If approved, the conversion would provide much-needed supported living accommodation for adults with additional needs in the Moseley area.
