The heart of a nine-year-old boy was successfully restarted by paramedics following a serious two-vehicle collision in Kings Norton, Birmingham, on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred at the junction of Sisefield Road and Primrose Hill at around 6pm on July 29.
Emergency Response and CPR
Upon arrival, emergency services found an off-duty nurse and police officers already performing CPR on the boy, who was a passenger in one of the cars. A spokesman for West Midlands Ambulance Service stated: “When ambulance staff arrived, they found an off-duty nurse and police colleagues performing CPR on a boy, a passenger from one of the vehicles involved.”
The ambulance service dispatched two ambulances, two paramedic officers, a trauma team, a critical care paramedic, and a Midlands Air Ambulance to the scene. Paramedics quickly took over resuscitation efforts, administering advanced life support which successfully restarted the boy's heart.
Hospitalisation and Arrests
The boy was rapidly conveyed by land ambulance on blue lights and sirens to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition. The driver of the same car, a woman, was assessed and found to have injuries not believed to be serious; she was treated at the scene and later taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
Two occupants of the second car, a man and a woman, were assessed and found to have sustained minor injuries. They were left in the care of police colleagues. West Midlands Police arrested a man and a woman at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Ambulance Service Statement
A spokeswoman for the ambulance service said: “A two-car collision in Birmingham last night has left a boy in a critical condition. The team of ambulance staff quickly took over resuscitation efforts to administer advanced life support which successfully restarted his heart.” She added that multiple 999 calls were received reporting the collision.
The area around Masshouse Lane in Kings Norton was cordoned off while investigations continued. The road has since reopened. The incident has shocked the local community, with residents expressing concern over road safety at the junction.
