A helicopter crash on the Greek island of Sifnos has killed three people, including a British couple who were reportedly on their honeymoon. The aircraft burst into flames shortly before it was due to land at the island's heliport on Monday evening.

Crash details and emergency response

The helicopter was approaching the landing pad when witnesses reported hearing a strange noise moments before the crash, according to Proto Therma. The incident occurred near homes in the Tholos neighbourhood shortly after 6pm local time (4pm UK time) on August 17.

After plummeting to the ground, the helicopter erupted into a huge fireball. The fire department said the bodies of three people were recovered once the flames had been extinguished.

Victims identified

Local reports indicate that two of the deceased were a British couple visiting the island for their honeymoon. The third victim is believed to be an experienced pilot and married father of three who had previously worked in the military, as reported by The Mirror.

The helicopter was operated by Bellavia Aviation Services. A photograph taken in the aftermath showed plumes of thick black smoke billowing from the crash site.

Investigation underway

Emergency services rushed to the scene, and the recovery operation was completed after the fire was brought under control. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
