Divers Search River Nene After Car Crash Leaves Two Teenagers Missing
Emergency services are conducting an extensive search operation after a car carrying five teenagers crashed into the River Nene in Cambridgeshire. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, March 17, leaving two young people unaccounted for.
Details of the Incident
The vehicle was traveling southbound on North Brink in Wisbech St Mary's, Cambridgeshire, at approximately 8:20 PM when it left the road and entered the river. According to Cambridgeshire Police, the car contained five individuals aged between 16 and 18, including two males and three females.
Three of the occupants—two females and one male—managed to escape from the vehicle after it entered the water. They were subsequently transported to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn with injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Ongoing Search Operation
Police divers have been deployed to search the River Nene for the two missing teenagers—a boy and a girl aged between 16 and 18—who were unable to exit the submerged vehicle. The search operation, which began on Tuesday night, continued throughout Wednesday, March 18, with a significant emergency services presence at the scene.
Photographs from the location show divers on the river banks and what appears to be a police forensics tent set up near the water's edge. North Brink is expected to remain closed for the remainder of the day as search efforts continue.
Police Appeal for Information
A spokesperson for Cambridgeshire Police stated: "A male and a female have not been accounted for and searches continue. We are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage. Anyone with information about the incident should use the reference incident 515 of 17 March and report it through the Cambridgeshire Police website."
The police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the crash or captured relevant footage to come forward to assist with the investigation. The community remains on edge as emergency personnel work tirelessly to locate the missing teenagers.
