Firefighters were called to Washwood Heath Road in Ward End on Friday evening (August 7) after a fierce blaze broke out behind a row of shops, sending a tall column of smoke visible from miles away and causing panic along the busy shopping street.
Around 18 firefighters, comprising six crews from West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS), were dispatched to the scene. The fire engulfed the grounds behind the shops, prompting the closure of Washwood Heath Road in both directions while crews worked to bring the flames under control.
Road Closed and Precautionary Advice Issued
As the fire raged, a tall column of smoke could be seen from across the city, alarming residents and shoppers. WMFS issued a statement on social media, urging people to avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed as a precaution.
"We have 6 crews in attendance at a fire on Washwood Heath Road, Birmingham," the service said. "As a precaution, if you live or work nearby, please keep doors and windows closed. Avoid the area, where possible."
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The road was later reopened after firefighters successfully contained the blaze, with the cause of the fire not yet disclosed.
