First Direct to Axe First Directory Insurance Add-On

First Direct has announced it will axe its popular 'First Directory' insurance add-on for current account customers from July 31, 2026. The service, which includes travel insurance, mobile insurance, and breakdown cover for a £15 monthly fee, has not been available to new customers since 2020. Following a recent review, the bank decided to close it completely.

What the Closure Means for Customers

Current policyholders will continue to receive cover as normal up to and including July 31, 2026. The final monthly payment will be taken in August as the fee is charged in arrears. After that date, cover will be extended for free until October 31, 2026, but with some changes. For travel insurance, customers will be covered for trips booked on or before July 31, 2026, that start on or before October 31, 2026. For mobile insurance, cover applies to devices purchased on or before July 31, 2026. Motor breakdown cover continues as normal until October 31, 2026. However, cover may end earlier if the policyholder turns 70, as First Directory has a maximum age of 69.

Bank's Statement and Advice

A spokesperson for First Direct, which has customers in Birmingham, said: “First Directory hasn’t been available to new customers since 2020. Following a recent review of what we offer our customers, we’ve made the difficult decision to close First Directory on 31 July 2026. We will extend your cover with some changes at no cost to you until 31 October 2026. This cover will not be available if you stop being eligible or First Directory is closed before 31 July 2026.” The bank emphasized that it has provided at least 90 days' notice, exceeding the minimum 30-day requirement, to give customers time to find alternative cover.
