Firefighters from West Midlands Fire Service worked for several hours to control a large grassland fire in Great Barr, Birmingham. The incident was reported on Thursday evening and involved an area of approximately 1,800 square metres.
Fire crews respond
Upon arrival, crews from Perry Barr, West Bromwich, and Aston fire stations found a substantial area of grassland alight. Four fire engines and a water carrier were dispatched to the scene at Gorse Farm Way, near the junction with Old Walsall Road.
The fire was located on some rough ground used by dog walkers and local residents. A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service said: “Our crews worked tirelessly to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to surrounding woodland and nearby properties.”
No injuries reported
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. Residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke, and a number of roads in the area were temporarily closed to allow emergency vehicles to access the site.
The blaze was eventually brought under control at around 9:30pm, and firefighters remained on scene for several hours damping down the affected area.
Cause under investigation
The cause of the fire has not yet been established, but early indications suggest it may have been caused accidentally, possibly by a discarded cigarette or glass bottle amplifying the sun's rays. Investigators are examining the site to determine the exact origin.
