A woman was left with potentially serious injuries following a four-vehicle crash on the M42 near Sutton Coldfield and Tamworth on Monday evening. The collision involved three cars and a van, with one vehicle reportedly towing a trailer that flipped over.
Crash details and emergency response
The incident occurred on the southbound carriageway between junctions 10 (Tamworth) and 9 (Sutton Coldfield, Lichfield, and Coleshill) at approximately 9pm on Monday, July 6. Emergency services, including West Midlands Ambulance Service and Warwickshire Police, attended the scene.
According to an ambulance service spokeswoman, the woman was a passenger in one of the cars. She received treatment at the scene before being transported by ambulance with blue lights and sirens to Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham for further care. Two other individuals involved in the collision were assessed and released at the scene.
Road closures and diversions
The M42 southbound was closed for several hours following the crash. A diversion route was established via the A5 and A453 from Mile Oak to Bassetts Pole, then along the A446 past The Belfry golf resort to rejoin the M42. The motorway fully reopened on Tuesday morning ahead of rush-hour traffic.
A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “A woman sustained potentially serious injuries following a road traffic collision involving four vehicles on the M42 near Sutton Coldfield last night. West Midlands Ambulance Service was called to the southbound carriageway of the M42 between junctions 10 and 9 at 9.04pm on Monday. Two ambulances and a paramedic officer responded to the scene. Crews arrived to find several cars which had been involved in a collision. The passenger of one car, a woman, suffered potentially serious injuries and received treatment on scene before being conveyed on blue lights and sirens to Heartlands Hospital for further care. Two other people involved in the collision were assessed and discharged on scene.”
Ongoing investigation
Warwickshire Police are investigating the cause of the crash. No further details have been released regarding the conditions of the injured woman or the other individuals involved.
