A 24-hour cycling challenge in Powys has raised over £13,600 for mental health charity South Powys Mind, far exceeding its original target of £2,400. The event, called the 'Cheeky Lake Loop', was organised by Izaak Duffy in memory of his close friend Gareth Evans, known as 'G' or 'Cheeky Ga'. The challenge took place around Llangors Lake, starting at 6pm on Wednesday, June 17, and continuing for 24 hours.
Community Support and Fundraising Success
Throughout the day and night, local supporters, cyclists, and volunteers joined Izaak on the route, providing food, encouragement, and company. The fundraiser has now raised over £13,600, with additional match funding still to be added. The money will support South Powys Mind in providing mental health services.
Izaak shared his motivation ahead of the challenge, reflecting on the hidden battles many face: "When you're in that place, it can feel like there's no way out. You convince yourself you're the only person who has ever felt that way and that you can't speak to anyone about it. It made me realise just how many people quietly carry these things and how important organisations like Mind are."
Impact on Mental Health Conversations
Beyond the financial milestone, the event created a safe space for people to open up about mental health, grief, and pressure. A spokesperson for South Powys Mind said: "It's hard to put into words what the Cheeky Lake Loop has meant and continues to mean. It would be easy to talk about the incredible amount of money raised - and make no mistake, that money will genuinely help change lives through the support South Powys Mind is able to provide - but there is a much bigger story here. This event became about community. People came together, people started talking, and conversations happened about mental health, grief, pressure and the reality that so many people struggle quietly. When someone shares a vulnerability, it often gives others permission to do the same. That's what this challenge created; connection, honesty and support."
