Sara Matthewson, a 51-year-old full-time carer from Northfield, has lost six-and-a-half stone after joining Slimming World to improve her health for the sake of her disabled daughter, Sophie. She weighed just over 21st 8lbs before her weight loss and now weighs 15st 1lb.
A Carer's Realisation
Matthewson, who dedicates every day to caring for Sophie, admitted she had neglected her own health for years, putting everyone else's needs ahead of her own. She said: "I realised that if I wanted to continue being the best mum and carer I could be for Sophie, I needed to look after my own health too."
Her decision to join a local Slimming World group in Cotteridge, run by consultant Nickie, marked the start of her transformation. Week by week, the weight came off, culminating in a loss of six-and-a-half stone.
More Than Just Weight Loss
Matthewson said the benefits extend beyond the scales. She said: "I feel healthier, happier and more confident than I have in years. I have more energy, more confidence and I know I'm investing in my future and in being here for Sophie."
She credits the group's support as crucial to her success: "Group gave me accountability, encouragement and belief in myself. Even when life was difficult, there was always someone cheering me on. Thank you, Nickie and everyone at the group."
An Inspiration to Others
Nickie, the Slimming World consultant, praised Matthewson's achievement: "Sara's achievement is absolutely incredible. She shows amazing commitment every day as a full-time carer and is an inspiration to our whole group. We are so proud of her."
Nickie hopes Sara's story will encourage other carers to prioritise their own health: "No matter how busy life gets, you are worth the care too. Sara's journey shows that with the right support, encouragement and a plan that fits around your life, amazing things are possible."
Matthewson's advice to others is simple: "However busy life becomes, don't forget to look after yourself too." Nickie runs Slimming World sessions at Cotteridge Church Hall, Pershore Road South, Cotteridge, B30 3EJ, every Friday at 9.30am.
