Consultant paediatrician Simon Fountain-Polley is celebrating his 50th birthday not with cake or a party, but by running the Porthcawl 10k on Sunday, July 5. The dedicated doctor aims to raise vital funds for the Hywel Dda paediatric diabetes service and Cilgerran ward at Glangwili Hospital.
Nearly Two Decades of Service
Having cared for children across west Wales for nearly 20 years, Simon is hitting the pavement to give back to the local services closest to his heart. He said: “I spend time on the children’s ward and paediatric diabetes clinics across all three counties in our health board area. I’m privileged to work alongside dedicated, hardworking and caring team members who provide invaluable support to vulnerable children and their families.”
Personal Connection to Diabetes
Simon added: “My colleagues often go above and beyond to help families, and additional funding can make a real difference in supporting these efforts. I also have a family member living with type 1 diabetes, so this is a cause that means a great deal to me personally.”
Charity Support
Katie Hancock, fundraising officer, said: “A massive good luck to Dr Simon Fountain-Polley with the Porthcawl 10k. Thank you for using your 50th as an opportunity to fundraise for local NHS charity. The generous charitable donations we receive don’t replace NHS funding. Instead, they are used to provide items and activities above and beyond core NHS expenditure, such as more welcoming surroundings for patients, families and staff, and research into, and the development of, treatments.”
Fundraising Target
Simon hopes to reach his £500 fundraising target. Donations can be made via the 50th Birthday Challenge for Cilgerran Ward/Paediatric Diabetes Team page. For more details about the charity and how to help support local NHS patients and staff, visit the Hywel Dda Health Charities website.
