The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is issuing payments of up to £580 in May for individuals with one of 23 common health complaints. This financial support comes through Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), a benefit designed for people whose disability or health condition affects their ability to work.
What is Employment and Support Allowance?
ESA provides financial assistance to help with living costs for those who cannot work due to a health condition or disability. It also offers support to help individuals return to work when they are able. You can apply whether you are employed, self-employed, or unemployed. The amount you receive depends on your application stage, age, and ability to work in the future.
Payment Amounts and Groups
If you are entitled to ESA, you will be placed into one of two groups. The work-related activity group is for those who may be able to work in the future, while the support group is for individuals with more severe conditions or those nearing the end of life. The weekly rates are up to £95.55 for the work-related activity group and up to £145.90 for the support group. Over a four-week period, this equates to a maximum payment of £580.
