East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has launched a special summer appeal to raise funds for days out, including beach trips, for families with seriously ill children. The campaign aims to provide opportunities that would otherwise be impossible without specialist equipment and support.
Family Shares Story of Beach Wheelchair
One family supported by EACH highlighted the importance of a specialist beach wheelchair, which allowed them to visit the seaside. Jodie Barden, whose 13-year-old daughter Chloe has Cockayne Syndrome—a rare genetic condition causing premature ageing and developmental delays—said these trips would be impossible without the hospice team's help. Chloe is joined by her sisters Mia, 8, and Ella, 19, who also lives with the same condition and previously received EACH support.
Campaign Reaches Doormats Across Counties
The family is fronting the campaign, which is being distributed to homes in multiple counties. Jodie Barden said: "We always have such a great time at the beach. It’s hard finding things we can all enjoy together, as a family. Even something simple like going to the park or for a bike ride can be difficult because it’s impossible for me to be in different places at once. An opportunity like this, which wouldn’t be possible otherwise, means a lot and is greatly appreciated."
Occupational Therapist Emphasises Planning Needs
Occupational therapist Jo Crane, who helps coordinate specialist care, added: "For many families, a trip to the seaside is a spontaneous outing. For those caring for a child with a life-limiting condition, it often requires significant planning, specialist equipment and support. The support we provide helps make experiences possible that many of us take for granted. Whether it’s a day at the beach, taking part in activities outside the hospice or simply spending quality time together, these moments can make an enormous difference."
Donations Fund Vital Care and Sibling Memories
Donations will fund care and activities outside traditional hospice and home settings, ensuring siblings can share special moments and enjoy childhood joys. To donate or learn more, visit the EACH website.
