Measles outbreak: 106 new cases, two children die in England

BirminghamLive has released a new interactive map revealing how measles has spread across England, following the tragic deaths of two children from the highly infectious virus this year.

Measles Spreads Amid Declining Vaccination Rates

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed the deaths in its latest update, noting that measles continues to circulate in many parts of the nation. The agency has not disclosed the specific locations where the deaths occurred.

Since the last update two weeks ago, a further 106 cases of measles have been confirmed by laboratory reports, bringing the total to 736 as of June 8. This compares to 959 cases across the whole of last year. Most infections have been in unvaccinated children under the age of 10.

UKHSA Urges Parents to Vaccinate

Dr Vanessa Saliba, consultant epidemiologist at the UKHSA, said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with the families who have so tragically lost their children. Measles continues to circulate in many parts of the country and as we have seen it can be very serious and even fatal.”

“We urge all parents to ensure their children are up to date with their MMR or MMRV vaccines, giving them the best and safest protection against measles – which can spread very easily. Anyone who has missed out on their measles vaccines can catch-up through their GP practice whatever their age. Getting vaccinated also helps protect babies who are too young to be vaccinated and people unable to have the vaccine due to a health condition. Please don’t delay and if you or your child are not up to date, book an appointment today.”

Historical Measles Deaths

Last year, two adults and a child with an underlying immunological problem died after contracting measles. In 2024, there were five measles deaths: three adults and one child with an immunological issue. Three adults and a child died in 2023.
