Reptile Rescue Centre Gets £1,500 Grant After Lizard Dumping

Barbora Fox, a local mother with a passion for lizards, has expanded her animal sanctuary in Long Eaton after a surge in unwanted reptiles being dumped. She and her partner Martin Metlicka run HF Animal Rescue Center, which now cares for over 50 creatures including geckos and bearded dragons. The non-profit recently moved to larger premises after outgrowing their family home.

Grant Supports Rescue Work

The centre secured a £1,500 Fast Funding grant from Erewash Borough Council. Barbora said: “Not long afterwards I wanted another reptile and adopted one with health issues. I became fascinated by them and spent hours every day researching and learning about their care.” The funding helps provide veterinary treatment and daily care.

Rescuing Injured Reptiles

One of the worst cases involved 10 baby bearded dragons that had sustained severe injuries from fighting. The previous owner could not afford treatment, but the centre managed to save every single one and find them loving families. Some animals are ready for rehoming, while others with ongoing health needs will stay permanently.

Barbora added: “We would like to thank Erewash Borough Council. The funding will make a significant difference to the animals in our care and help us continue providing rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming services for animals in need.”

Council Support for Community Groups

Councillor Becca Everett, Lead Member for Community Engagement at Erewash Borough Council, commented: “Barbora’s tireless work saving reptiles highlights how people should think carefully about buying them as pets.” She continued: “Our grants to organisations such as hers are being fuelled by the authority’s £6.5million Erewash Investment Fund – which is money that the council is ploughing into boosting the borough in all kinds of ways.”

Voluntary groups and community initiatives can find details on how to apply for grants on the Erewash Borough Council website.
