Heatwave Advice Issued as Red Alert Hits West Midlands
West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) has issued eight key pieces of advice for residents during the ongoing heatwave, as a red "extreme heat" Met Office alert remains in place for Birmingham and surrounding areas. The service shared a TikTok video on June 24 urging people to "look after yourself and your friends and family" amid scorching temperatures.
Eight Tips to Stay Safe in the Heat
WMAS recommends the following measures to cope with the hot weather:
- Drink plenty of fluids – Stay hydrated, but avoid alcohol and limit caffeine.
- Keep cool – Cool your skin with water, but do not swim in open water like rivers or lakes without a lifeguard present, as this can be extremely dangerous.
- Stay protected – Wear sun cream, a hat, and sunglasses when outdoors.
- Wear loose clothing – Choose fabrics like cotton or linen to stay cool.
- Take it slow – Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day.
- Avoid peak sun hours – Stay out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, typically the hottest period.
- Close blinds and curtains – Keep them shut during the day to block heat, and open windows at night when temperatures drop.
- Check on vulnerable loved ones – Look after elderly friends, family, and neighbours who may be more affected by the heat.
Pet Safety Also Important
Residents are also reminded to take care of their pets during the heatwave, as animals can struggle with high temperatures too.
