NHS Midlands Issues Guidance Amid Six-Day Doctors' Strike

The NHS in the Midlands has released essential guidance for residents across the region as a six-day strike by resident doctors continues, impacting healthcare services. This industrial action, part of a dispute over pay organized by the British Medical Association (BMA), began on Tuesday, April 7, and is set to last for six days, including the busy Easter period.

Key Advice for Patients During the Strike

Residents are strongly advised to use NHS 111 online as the first point of contact for non-emergency medical advice, especially following the recent bank holiday weekend when services are typically under increased pressure. The NHS emphasizes that hospitals and primary care facilities in the Midlands are working diligently to minimize disruption, but patients should expect busy conditions throughout the week.

Emergency and Non-Emergency Protocols

In emergency situations, such as chest pain indicating a possible heart attack, facial drooping that could signal a stroke, difficulty breathing, heavy bleeding, seizures, or sudden swelling of the eyes, lips, throat, or tongue, individuals should immediately call 999. For urgent but non-life-threatening needs, NHS 111 online provides a streamlined way to access care, including arranging callbacks from clinicians, booking A&E appointments, or receiving medical advice.

Vijay Rawal, the regional medical director for primary care at NHS England – Midlands, stated: "The Easter weekend and the days that follow are always a busy time for the health service, and with the addition of industrial action, we want all those that need to be seen to make sure they're accessing the part of the NHS that's best for their health condition." He added that the NHS remains operational and grateful to staff, including resident doctors not participating in the strike, for their extra efforts.

Additional Healthcare Options

Patients are encouraged to continue contacting their GPs as usual or consult pharmacists for common health issues like sinusitis, sore throats, earaches, infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women. The NHS website highlights that NHS 111 online can also assist with finding appropriate help for symptoms, accessing general health information, obtaining emergency prescriptions, and booking emergency dental appointments.

This guidance aims to ensure residents across the Midlands, including Birmingham where strikes are also occurring, can navigate healthcare services effectively during this period of industrial action. Patients with planned appointments should attend unless notified otherwise, as services strive to maintain as much scheduled care as possible.
