Orjan Nyland Stuns Brazil: Ex-Villa Keeper Saves Penalty

Nyland's Heroics Against Brazil

Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Orjan Nyland produced a stunning performance to help Norway knock Brazil out of the World Cup on Sunday night. The 35-year-old saved Bruno Guimaraes' penalty in the 14th minute of the round-of-16 clash, making four saves in total and preventing 0.76 expected goals (xG).

From Villa Outcast to World Cup Star

Nyland's time at Aston Villa was largely forgettable, with more disappointing moments than impressive ones. He joined Villa in the summer of 2018 as the club's third signing, arriving a week after Andre Moreira and a day before John McGinn. He made 36 appearances in all competitions, including the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City.

His finest moment in a Villa shirt came in the Carabao Cup semi-final against Leicester City, where he made several crucial saves. Then-manager Dean Smith said: "We were indebted to Orjan Nyland who made three wonderful saves - two down low and then one onto the crossbar, which was really top drawer. He has certainly given me a conundrum, but they’re ones I want."

Injury and Departure

A ruptured Achilles tendon ended Nyland's first season early, opening the door for Jed Steer. After promotion, Tom Heaton's arrival and later Pepe Reina's loan pushed Nyland further down the pecking order. He mutually terminated his contract in October 2020.

Upon leaving, Nyland said: "I would like to thank Aston Villa for fulfilling my boyhood dream of playing in the Premier League. Together we have shared great memories I will remember for the rest of my life, helping the club back to where it belongs, staying up and a cup final at Wembley."

What's Next for Nyland?

Nyland now faces England and Harry Kane in the quarter-finals. After the game of his life against Brazil, he will look to upset England and prove a point to those Villa fans who never saw this remarkable revival coming.
