Birmingham Man Creates Heart-Warming Pub Events to Foster Community Connections

Jake Watkins, a mental health professional who relocated from Devon to Birmingham in 2024, has found a unique way to build his social life while helping others. He now serves as an organizer for Empty Chairs, a weekly event held in local pubs designed to get people talking and combat feelings of isolation.

From Participant to Host

Jake first attended an Empty Chairs gathering on his twenty-third birthday, drawn to its mission of creating open spaces for conversation. Since that initial experience, he has taken on a leadership role, hosting weekly meetings and selecting new pub locations across Birmingham for the events.

The initiative was originally founded by Dean Perryman, who started Empty Chairs after losing his friend Rob to suicide. The concept has since expanded nationwide, with meetings set up in pubs featuring several empty chairs to symbolize that anyone is welcome to join and discuss life's ups and downs.

A Welcoming Environment for All

In a recent interview, Jake emphasized the importance of providing a comfortable, inclusive setting. "For me, it's about creating an environment where people don't feel isolated and can make potential friends," he explained. "You can talk about anything, and the act of talking is what matters most."

He highlighted the pub as an ideal venue due to its cultural significance and accessibility. "The pub is a very British place where everyone can go for a drink and a chat. Everywhere has a pub nearby, making it a nice hub for conversations about both good and bad times."

Jake contrasted this with more formal settings, noting that pubs serve as effective icebreakers. "If we did this in a restaurant for a sit-down meal, people wouldn't feel as comfortable. Pubs are less formal and cheaper than a weekly meal, which encourages participation."

Open to Everyone

The events are designed to be inclusive and low-pressure. "You just need to come for a drink, and it doesn't have to be alcohol—it could even be a glass of water," Jake said. "It doesn't matter what age or gender; this is for everyone. You don't have to be struggling, and you don't have to drink. You might just be bored on a Monday night and want something to do."

He also pointed out that attendees can play supportive roles. "Even if you don't need to talk, you can support someone who does and contribute to the cause."
