Lichfield Counsellor Publishes Poetry Anthology to Support Mental Health

In Lichfield, counsellor Sheila McMahon has witnessed firsthand how poetry transcends mere hobby status, becoming a vital lifeline for many grappling with mental health challenges. Her personal experience underscores this, as she recently released an anthology titled 'Behind Closed Doors', featuring poems penned during depressive episodes in her teens and twenties.

Poetry as an Emotional Outlet

"Sometimes people feel overwhelmed by their emotions and simply need an outlet. Poetry can give them a way to release what they’re carrying," Sheila explained. She emphasized that writing poetry offers a cathartic release, helping individuals process complex emotions like grief or traumatic memories, which can significantly benefit mental well-being.

Reflecting on her own journey, Sheila added: "I didn’t know at the time of writing my poetry, because of my age, but I know now that my poetry helped me to get through my own mental health struggles. It allowed me to openly write down how I was feeling and be honest about how I was struggling with everyday life."

Research Backs Poetry's Therapeutic Benefits

A 2023 study exploring poetry's benefits during the pandemic found that approximately 50% of participants reported that reading or writing poetry helped them manage feelings of anxiety and depression. The study further revealed that poetry therapy enabled deeper emotional processing in nearly two-thirds of participants, with around 80% admitting it allowed them to actively express themselves. Additionally, it helped ease loneliness for many during periods of isolation.

Book Launch and Community Impact

Sheila hopes her anthology will provide others with the same lifeline it offered her, offering hope to those struggling in silence. The well-attended launch event at the Lichfield Garrick’s lounge featured Sheila speaking candidly about her mental health journey and performing select poems. One attendee praised the event, saying: "Your talk was so very honest, and I felt that it gave others permission to talk about their own mental health struggles quite openly. It was very refreshing."

The book 'Behind Closed Doors' is available through Sheila McMahon's website and on Amazon, aiming to reach a wider audience seeking solace and expression through poetry.
