NHS Launches Urgent Campaign to Tackle Missed GP Appointments

The National Health Service has issued a new plea to patients across England following the revelation that a staggering 16 million GP appointments were missed in 2025. This equates to approximately one in every 23 scheduled visits being a no-show, which is the equivalent of an entire day of missed appointments at every single GP practice in the country each month.

Simple Solution: Enable Push Notifications

In response to this alarming statistic, the NHS has launched the 'Tap the NHS App' campaign. This initiative urges all phone users to turn on push alerts from the NHS App. By doing so, patients will receive timely reminders about their upcoming appointments and have the ability to easily rearrange any that they cannot attend.

Dr. Amanda Doyle, the National Director for Primary Care and Community Services at NHS England, emphasized the importance of this measure. "People will often have genuine reasons for not being able to make an appointment or arriving too late, but it's really important that they let us know if possible so we can offer the appointment to someone else," she stated.

Survey Highlights Common Issues

A recent survey of patients in England uncovered some of the key reasons behind missed appointments:

  • 12% of respondents admitted they had forgotten about an appointment in the past.
  • 11% reported arriving too late for their scheduled visit.

These findings underscore the need for better communication and reminder systems within the healthcare framework.

Campaign Reach and Additional Features

The 'Tap the NHS App' campaign is being promoted through various channels to maximize its impact:

  1. Advertisements on pharmacy bags.
  2. Radio channel broadcasts.
  3. Targeted social media campaigns.

Beyond appointment reminders, the NHS App offers several other convenient features designed to streamline patient care:

  • Patients can cancel or rearrange appointments directly through the app.
  • The app allows users to request repeat prescriptions without needing to visit their GP practice.
  • A new Amazon-style prescription tracking feature provides updates on prescription progress and collection readiness, currently available at 2,000 pharmacies across England.

Government Support and Future Goals

Dr. Zubir Ahmed, the Health Innovation Minister, voiced his support for the campaign. "In the busy lives we all lead, it can be easy to forget an NHS appointment or need to reorganise it at the last minute," he remarked. "That's why I'd encourage everyone to tap the NHS App and turn on notifications – so you can stay on top of your appointments and let us know if you need to reschedule."

The NHS arranged a total of 376 million appointments at GP practices in 2025, which represents an increase of 8.4 million compared to the previous year. Dr. Doyle expressed optimism about the future, saying, "It's fantastic to see that GPs provided more than 8 million extra appointments for their patients in 2025, and I hope this new campaign will help increase that number even more in 2026."

By leveraging technology and encouraging proactive patient engagement, the NHS aims to significantly reduce the number of missed appointments, thereby improving access to healthcare services and cutting waiting times for all.
