The Southport Macmillan Centre is currently offering a variety of exercise classes designed to enhance the health and wellbeing of individuals who have received a cancer diagnosis. Exercise can be highly beneficial for cancer patients, helping them maintain strength, cope better with treatment, and recover more easily from surgery. It can also prepare patients for surgery and optimise their recovery chances.
Swimming Class Details
We offer a swimming class every Wednesday morning at 10.30am in the Splashworld Pool at the Dunes Leisure Centre in Southport. The group has exclusive use of the pool and changing room for one hour. Some members swim continuously, while others take breaks or engage in water-based exercises.
Swimming is a highly effective, low-impact exercise that provides a full-body workout. It improves cardiovascular endurance and allows for aerobic exercise without repetitive stress on bones and joints, as water supports body weight. Swimming can reduce the overall risk of early death by 28 per cent and significantly lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. It aids breathing difficulties, builds muscle strength and bone density safely, making it ideal for managing arthritis and recovering from injury. Additionally, swimming boosts mental wellbeing and helps manage anxiety through rhythmic movements that induce a meditative state and promote relaxation.
We currently have spaces in our swimming class. A suggested donation of £2 helps cover pool hire costs. To join this class or any other exercise class, contact the Southport Macmillan Centre at 01704 533 024. Our fitness specialist will conduct a short health questionnaire to ensure safe exercise.
Sun Protection Reminder
As the weather improves and the sun shines more often, remember to wear sun protection. Skin cancer is common but highly curable if caught early. For advice on protecting yourself and what to do if concerned, visit www.cancerresearchuk.org or www.macmillan.org.uk, or consult your GP.
For any cancer information or support, whether you have a worry, a diagnosis, or are supporting a loved one, contact Southport Macmillan Centre at 29 Wright Street, Southport, call 01704 533 024, or email cmicb-sf.macmillancic@nhs.net. We are open for drop-in Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm. We would be glad to help you.
