HMRC Wrongly Chases UK Households for Tax Returns

HMRC is reportedly chasing UK households for tax returns they do not owe, according to a recent claim. A concerned taxpayer, aged 93 and terminally ill, reached out to leading tax advisor Mike Warburton for help after receiving a series of letters from the tax authority under the Labour Party government.

Taxpayer's Ordeal

The taxpayer, who had already completed their tax return, wrote to The Telegraph expressing frustration: "Why is HMRC harassing me for a tax return I’ve already completed?" They detailed that after submitting their return in May 2025, they received a letter from HMRC claiming they had not filed a return for 2023-24. Despite providing evidence of a £1,998.91 debit from their bank account by HMRC on May 10, 2024, the issue persisted.

Last month, another letter arrived with the same claim about a nil return. After spending hours on the phone, including listening to lengthy recordings, the taxpayer finally spoke to a person but was cut off after 40 minutes. Repeating the process led to another disconnection. The taxpayer lamented: "There is no local tax office and no one to ask for advice."

Resolution After Intervention

Following intervention from Mr. Warburton, it was discovered that the taxpayer had viewed their tax liability before submission but had not completed the final step to file the return. HMRC acknowledged the error and offered an olive branch. The taxman confirmed to Mike: "We’ve written to [Patrick] to confirm we’ve cancelled his late filing penalties, taking into account his specific circumstances."

This case highlights the difficulties faced by elderly and vulnerable taxpayers when dealing with HMRC's automated systems and the importance of seeking professional advice in such situations.
