State Pensioners Over 75 Can Get BBC TV Licence for £0 with Pension Credit
Over 75s Get Free BBC TV Licence with Pension Credit

State pensioners aged over 75 can reduce their BBC TV Licence fee to £0 at a milestone birthday. You are entitled to a free TV licence if you are aged 75 or over and you, or your partner living at the same address, receive Pension Credit.

Who Qualifies for a Free TV Licence?

You need a TV licence to watch, record, or download most TV programmes, whether on a TV or online. A free licence is available only if you are over 75 and receive Pension Credit, which includes Savings Credit or Guarantee Pension Credit. You can apply from age 74.

The licence must be in the name of the person at your address who is aged 75+ and receiving Pension Credit. It is not automatic; ensure the name matches the one held by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). If the current licence is in someone else's name, you will need the licence number when applying.

Discounts and Payment Options

If you are severely sight impaired (blind), you can get a 50% discount on your TV licence. A free licence covers you and anyone else living with you, regardless of age. If no one in your household receives Pension Credit, you must pay for the licence.

For those who find payment difficult, options include spreading the cost via Direct Debit or using a TV Licensing payment card. In some cases, you may qualify for a Simple Payment Plan, but this requires a referral from certain charities or debt advice agencies.

When Do You Need a TV Licence?

You must have a valid TV licence if you watch or record TV programmes as they are broadcast on any channel, download or watch programmes on BBC iPlayer, or watch or stream live programmes on online services such as Channel 4 or ITVX. Even without a television, a licence may be needed for devices like computers, laptops, tablets, digital boxes, games consoles, or DVD recorders.

For more information, visit the official TV Licensing website or contact the DWP.
