Major UK supermarkets have issued an urgent product recall just days before Christmas, urging shoppers to check their freezers. Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, and the Co-op are all involved in the recall of a specific batch of fish fillets due to a serious undeclared allergen.
Details of the Food Safety Alert
The recall concerns Young’s Gastro 2 Lemon & Pepper Fish Fillets. The manufacturer, Young's Seafood, has initiated the action because some packs were made using an ingredient containing mustard, which is not declared on the product label. This poses a significant health risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to mustard.
The affected product is a 270g pack. Shoppers are advised to look for the following identifying marks:
- Barcode: 500205048277
- Batch Codes: F2 L5283
- Best Before Date: October 2026
The batch code can be found immediately under the Best Before Date on the side of the pack.
What Customers Need to Do
Customers with a mustard allergy are strongly advised not to eat this product. Those who have purchased it should return it to the point of purchase at any Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, or Co-op store for a full refund. A receipt is not required for the return.
Young's has provided an alternative for customers unable to return to a store. They can take a photograph of the packaging, clearly showing the batch code, and email it to care@youngsseafood.co.uk to arrange a refund.
Manufacturer's Response and Reassurance
In a statement, Young's Seafood apologised for the inconvenience and emphasised its commitment to safety. "The safety and quality of our products is of the highest importance to us and we take all issues regarding the production of our food extremely seriously," a spokesperson said.
The company confirmed that this recall only affects the specific batch codes listed and no other Young’s products or date codes are involved. They have assured customers that all retailers are aware and that steps are being taken to prevent a similar incident in the future.
This urgent recall serves as a critical reminder for consumers, especially those with food allergies, to always check product labels and recall notices, particularly during the busy festive period when shopping habits change.
