Wolverhampton Council approves life-saving defibrillator and bleed kit cabinet at Nationwide branch
Wolverhampton approves defibrillator cabinet at Nationwide branch

The City of Wolverhampton Council has approved plans to install a combined defibrillator and bleed kit cabinet on the external wall of the Nationwide Building Society branch on Dudley Street in Wolverhampton city centre. The decision, made on August 17, allows for 24/7 access to vital emergency equipment at a prominent location.

Nationwide's commitment to community wellbeing

A planning statement submitted by Nationwide Building Society alongside the proposals on July 20 explained that the defibrillator will enable "24/7 access to vital emergency equipment." The statement outlined that Nationwide is committed to supporting the communities they serve, with branches located at the centre of high streets across Britain.

"As part of this commitment to community wellbeing, they aim to install life saving equipment to some of their branches to ensure people have rapid, 24/7 access to vital emergency equipment whenever it is needed," the statement read. Wolverhampton does not appear to be the only branch benefitting from these plans, as the statement noted the idea is to incorporate the kits on "some Nationwide branches."

Cabinet details and placement

The cabinets, sourced from St John's Ambulance, along with branding that Nationwide intends to supply, are detailed in the planning documents. The statement added: "The cabinets need to be in a prominent location where they can be easily seen, and at a height where they can be reached in case they are needed in an emergency."

"We have proposed that the cabinets are fixed in locations that, whilst prominent, have limited impact on the appearance of the conservation area. The cabinets can be removed if they become redundant and the benefits of installing these cabinets are potentially life-saving, so we consider that this outweighs any harm to the appearance of the conservation area," the statement continued.

Council approval and next steps

The City of Wolverhampton Council gave the proposal the green light on August 17. The approval ensures that the defibrillator and bleed kit cabinet will be installed to the external wall of the Nationwide Building Society branch, providing rapid access to emergency equipment for the community.
