The Warm Home Discount, worth £150, has been extended for the 2026/2027 winter season, the Labour Party government has confirmed. State pensioners born before 1960 who claim Pension Credit Guarantee Credit or Pension Credit Savings Credit are among those set to receive the one-off payment following a rule change that expands eligibility to six million people.
What Is the Warm Home Discount?
Introduced in April 2011, the Warm Home Discount is a one-off payment made towards electricity bills for eligible customers in England, Scotland, and Wales. For winter 2026/2027, the £150 discount will be applied between November 2026 and March 31, 2027, with most recipients receiving it before January 2027.
Expanded Eligibility Criteria
The government has confirmed that the rules have changed to open up the payout to six million people. All means-tested benefits recipients can now qualify. British Gas stated: "The eligibility requirements have been expanded for the coming scheme so more customers will benefit from the Warm Home Discount payment for Winter 2026/2027. To qualify, you need to claim either the Guarantee Credit portion of Pension Credit or a different 'qualifying benefit.'"
How to Receive the Payment
In England and Wales, the government will write to eligible customers to confirm their eligibility. In Scotland, if you receive the Guarantee Credit portion of Pension Credit, the government will write to you and you do not need to apply.
