Celebrities who rejected King's Birthday Honours list

The King's Birthday Honours 2026 list has been confirmed, featuring 1,182 recipients including Helen Mirren, Kevin Sinfield, and David Sproxton. However, not everyone has accepted the honour in the past. Some of the UK's most prestigious figures have turned down the recognition for various personal and political reasons.

Roald Dahl

The author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory declined a knighthood in 1986. While he never gave an official reason, it was widely suspected he was holding out for a more prestigious baronetcy.

C.S. Lewis

The creator of The Chronicles of Narnia quietly refused a CBE in 1951 to avoid becoming entangled in political or state associations.

David Bowie

Bowie turned down a CBE in 2000 and a full knighthood in 2003. He stated: "I would never have any intention of accepting anything like that. I seriously don't know what it's for. It's not what I spent my life working for."

George Harrison

The former Beatle declined an OBE in 2000. It is widely believed he felt insulted by the offer, given that his former bandmate Paul McCartney had been awarded a higher-ranking knighthood three years prior.

John Lennon

Lennon initially accepted an MBE alongside the rest of The Beatles in 1965 but famously returned it in 1969. He sent it back with a letter to the Queen protesting Britain's involvement in the Nigeria-Biafra war and its support of America in the Vietnam War.

Paul Weller

The mod-rock icon politely declined a CBE in 2006. His spokesperson stated that while he was flattered, "it wasn't really for him."

Danny Boyle

The Oscar-winning director turned down a knighthood following his direction of the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. He felt it was a massive collective effort and that taking an individual title would be wrong, stating he preferred being an "equal citizen."

Jim Broadbent

He rejected an OBE in 2002, stating that honours should go to ordinary citizens who truly help others. He added: "I like the idea of actors not being part of the Establishment. We're vagabonds and rogues."

Michael Sheen

Sheen accepted an OBE in 2009 but quietly handed it back a few years later. He did so after researching Welsh history for a lecture, realizing he would feel like a hypocrite critiquing the historical relationship between Wales and the British state while holding a royal title.

Stephen Hawking

The world-renowned physicist turned down a knighthood in the late 1990s. His choice was heavily influenced by his dislike of personal titles, as well as his frustration with the UK government's severe cuts to science funding at the time.

Jon Snow

The former Channel 4 News presenter refused an OBE in 2000. He believed accepting a state honour would compromise his journalistic integrity, and he later made a documentary exposing the inner workings and secrecy of the honours system.

Nigella Lawson

The television cook and food writer turned down an OBE in 2001, stating: "I'm not saving lives and I'm not doing anything other than something I absolutely love."
