EFL Responds to West Brom Fan Trust Over PSR Uncertainty

West Bromwich Albion supporters remain in limbo regarding a potential points deduction for an alleged breach of the Professional Football Compensation Rules (PSR). The uncertainty has persisted for over ten days, with the club edging closer to Premier League survival.

Club Statement and Silence from EFL

West Brom issued a robust statement asserting full compliance with all regulations. However, the English Football League (EFL) has not provided any official comment, leaving fans and stakeholders without clarity on potential sanctions.

Speculation continues regarding the nature of the breach, with reports suggesting it relates to interest payments on loans taken out by the previous ownership. Neither the club nor the EFL has confirmed these details.

Fan Trust Demands Answers

The Albion Independent Supporters’ Trust (AIST) wrote to the EFL demanding immediate clarification. In a statement on social media, the trust confirmed receiving a response, but described it as unsatisfactory.

"We’ve now received a response from the EFL which simply acknowledges our email and says further comment will follow in due course," the trust posted. "We’ve replied to say this is unacceptable and have again requested immediate clarity with one week of the season remaining."

Shareholders for Albion Also Engage

Leigh Kent of Shareholders for Albion, who works in the legal sector, also wrote to both the EFL and the newly established independent football regulator. Kent addressed issues of sporting integrity and timing, noting that the club cannot discuss the matter substantively at this stage.

Based on his involvement since 2020, Kent expressed an informed view that West Brom would not be in breach if all relevant factors were considered. He reminded the EFL of the sequence of events leading to the MSD loan, highlighting what he described as shortcomings by both the EFL and the Premier League that necessitated a significant portion of the loan.

Kent emphasized the complexity of the issues and noted that the club has been advised by at least two professional firms. He had close liaison with West Brom during the troubled tenure of former owner Guochuan Lai, before the club was rescued in February 2024 when administration was a genuine possibility.
