Nine former Lancashire County Councillors have been awarded the title of Honorary Alderman in recognition of their outstanding service to Lancashire. The title is granted to former councillors who, in the opinion of the county council, have rendered eminent service during their time in office. The county council uses service of at least four terms as a starting point when considering former members for the honour.
Special Council Meeting Approves Honour
At a special meeting of Full Council recently, members approved the honour for former councillors who have each served Lancashire County Council for 16 years or more and are no longer serving members. The new Honorary Aldermen are: Terence Aldridge, Peter Britcliffe, Francesco De Molfetta, John Fillis, Steve Holgate, Andrea Kay, Jennifer Mein, John Shedwick, and Matthew Tomlinson.
Highest Award for Former Councillors
Speaking at the meeting, County Councillor Lee Hutchinson, chairman of Lancashire County Council, said: "To be granted the status of Honorary Alderman is a great achievement and a true recognition of the depth and time and commitment that these individuals have given to serving their communities. It's the highest award that can be given to a former councillor in recognition of exceptional services."
Cumulative 176 Years of Service
Cllr Hutchinson noted that the nine former councillors served a cumulative total of 176 years with the county council, ranging from 16 years to 24 years each. County Councillor Stephen Atkinson, leader of Lancashire County Council, formally proposed the motion, stating: "The nine nominees for the title of Honorary Alderman have served with the county council for a very long time. It's an incredible achievement and honour to be able to work passionately for our community for so many years and their knowledge and insight has undoubtedly benefitted those they have represented right across the county. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that all nine nominees have rendered eminent service with the county council and they fully derive the title of Honorary Alderman at Lancashire County Council."
Names Inscribed on Honours Boards
The recommendations were approved by Full Council. All nine names have been inscribed on the honours boards, where they will be permanently placed on display at the Christ Church Precinct at County Hall.
