Wakefield Council Issues £70 Supermarket Vouchers to Help with Christmas Costs
£70 Christmas Vouchers for Wakefield Households

Selected households in Wakefield are receiving a welcome financial boost ahead of the festive season, with supermarket vouchers being distributed to help cover the cost of Christmas food and essentials.

Who is Eligible for the Voucher Support?

The support comes from the government's Household Support Fund, but each local authority decides how to allocate the money. Wakefield Council has chosen to provide direct help in the form of supermarket vouchers.

Pensioners who receive Council Tax Support should have already been sent a £70 voucher in November. Furthermore, families who are in receipt of Council Tax Support will be issued a £50 voucher, with distribution starting from December 15.

Council Warns Residents Over Fraud Attempts

In light of the scheme, Wakefield Council has issued a stark warning to residents about potential fraud. Scammers are reportedly sending texts or emails claiming to be from the council, asking for bank details to process a Household Support Fund payment.

The council has emphasised that these communications are fake. "We are aware that fraudsters are sending text messages or e-mails to residents," a statement on the council's website reads. "Please ignore any messages you receive that may be similar to this."

All genuine vouchers are issued by post, and recipients do not need to provide any bank account details to use them. Wakefield Council has confirmed it will never ask for bank details via text or email.

How Other Councils Are Using the Fund

While Wakefield has opted for supermarket vouchers, other local authorities are deploying the Household Support Fund differently. For example, Blackpool Council is providing direct energy bill assistance.

Eligible households with one or two people, including children, will receive £200 in energy help. Larger households of three or more people, including children, will qualify for a £300 award.

This variation highlights the localised nature of the support, designed to address specific needs within different communities across the UK during the ongoing cost of living pressures.
