Burnham Announces Leadership Bid After Starmer's Resignation
Andy Burnham has confirmed his intention to stand for Prime Minister, following Sir Keir Starmer's resignation earlier today. The former Manchester mayor broke his silence on X, thanking Starmer for his service and outlining his own candidacy. Starmer stepped down as Labour leader and Prime Minister, triggering a leadership contest to be concluded by September.
Burnham's Statement on Transition
In a post on X, Burnham wrote: "Keir has given huge service to our country and I want to thank him for his leadership and dedication during such a challenging period. His decision marks the beginning of a transition and it is important that this process is conducted in an orderly and responsible way. I will put myself forward as part of this process." He emphasized stability and focus on key issues: economic growth, cost of living, public services, housing, and opportunities for the next generation.
Streeting Backs Burnham
Wes Streeting, the former Health Secretary, has confirmed he will not run for the leadership and instead supports Burnham. Streeting stated: "We could spend the summer exaggerating small differences, or we can roll up our sleeves and help him to deliver the change our party and our country needs. That is the choice that I am making and I hope that everyone else will back Andy, too." Streeting added that Labour was elected to change the country and show politics can be a force for good.
Context and Implications
Burnham's bid follows his decisive win in the Makerfield by-election, which positioned him as the frontrunner. Starmer's resignation came after a period of political challenges, and the transition aims to maintain stability. The Labour Party will select a new leader by September, with Burnham now the clear favourite.
