The BBC documentary series Murder 24/7 is returning to one of the West Midlands' most shocking murders – the 2023 killing of DPD driver Aurman Singh – as police continue their hunt for two remaining attackers.
Brutal Attack in Broad Daylight
Aurman Singh, 23, was delivering packages on Berwick Avenue in Shrewsbury on a sunny August day in 2023 when he was ambushed by a gang of eight men. Armed with an axe, wooden stave, metal bar, hockey stick, shovel, knife and cricket bat, the attackers left Singh lying in a pool of blood beside his van. His injuries were so severe that he had no chance of survival.
Four of the attackers were captured within two hours after fleeing the scene in an Audi, but the other four escaped, sparking a cross-border manhunt.
Ongoing Search for Justice
Nearly nine months later, two of the fugitives – Sehajpal Singh and Mehakdeep Singh – were traced to Austria and extradited. They were sentenced to life in prison in April 2025 after a trial at Stafford Crown Court, along with the four men caught earlier. All six received life sentences with a minimum term of 28 years. However, two men remain at large: Sukhmandeep Singh, 24, from Peterborough, was convicted of manslaughter and jailed for 10 years for supplying the gang with information about Aurman's delivery route. The other two attackers have not yet been identified publicly.
Motive: Retaliation for Kabbadi Match Violence
The motive for the attack emerged during the trial. Mehakdeep Singh testified that convicted killer Arshdeep Singh told him the group needed to 'threaten a guy' believed to have been involved in violence at a Kabbadi match in Derby the previous day. Friends of the gang had been injured at the tournament. Mehakdeep said he did not know the victim's identity until they arrived at the scene and saw the DPD van.
Family's Devastation
At Stafford Crown Court, Aurman's mother, Kuljit Kaur, described her son as a 'beacon of love and kindness'. She told the court: 'I would do anything to have just one more moment with him and give him a hug.' She said his death had 'shattered her world' and that she clung to hope until she saw his lifeless body.
Murder 24/7 Revisits the Case
The case originally featured in series two of Murder 24/7, but the BBC has now devoted a second episode to it due to developments since the original broadcast. The new episode airs tonight on BBC One at 9pm and is also available on BBC iPlayer. It covers the arrests in Austria, the trial, and the ongoing search for the remaining attackers.
West Mercia Police continue to urge anyone with information about the two outstanding suspects to come forward. The investigation remains active, and Aurman's family continues to fight for full justice.
