DWP Payments Face May Schedule Changes After April Easter Adjustments
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that payments for 11 key benefits will undergo schedule changes in May 2026, following similar adjustments made for the Easter weekend in April. This announcement comes as the UK prepares for two bank holidays in May, which impact the standard payment dates for millions of claimants across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.
April Easter Payment Adjustments
In April, DWP and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) payments were altered due to the Easter bank holidays. With Easter falling on Sunday, April 5, 2026, benefit payments originally scheduled for Good Friday or bank holiday Monday were issued early on Thursday, April 2. This change affected payments due on Friday, April 3 or Monday, April 6, ensuring claimants received their funds without delay.
The DWP also noted that Jobcentre Plus offices and phone lines were closed on April 3 and April 6, resuming normal operations on Tuesday, April 7. Payments not falling on these holiday dates were processed as usual, minimizing disruption for recipients.
May Bank Holiday Impact
In May 2026, two bank holidays will prompt further adjustments: the Early May bank holiday on Monday, May 4, and the Spring bank holiday on Monday, May 25. These holidays typically create three-day weekends, necessitating changes to payment schedules to avoid delays.
The DWP has stated that the payment changes implemented for Easter will be replicated in May. Specifically, claimants scheduled to receive payments on Monday, May 4, will instead have their benefits paid out on Friday, May 1. This early payment ensures that individuals relying on these funds are not left waiting over the long weekend.
Full List of Affected Benefits
The following 11 benefits are impacted by the May schedule changes, including nine administered by the DWP and two by HMRC:
- Attendance Allowance
- Carer’s Allowance
- Employment Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support
- Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Pension Credit
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- State Pension
- Universal Credit
- Child Benefit (HMRC)
- Guardian's Allowance (HMRC)
These adjustments are part of standard procedures to accommodate bank holidays, ensuring timely access to essential financial support for vulnerable groups across the UK.
What Claimants Need to Know
If your payment date does not coincide with a bank holiday, it will be processed as normal. However, for those affected, it is crucial to plan finances accordingly, as early payments may require budgeting over extended periods. The DWP advises claimants to check their payment schedules online or contact relevant offices for confirmation, especially during holiday periods.
This proactive approach by the DWP and HMRC aims to reduce uncertainty and support financial stability for benefit recipients, highlighting the importance of clear communication during schedule disruptions.
