The Department for Work and Pensions is providing an additional £200 to state pensioners aged between 66 and 80. This payment forms part of the Winter Fuel Payments, which the Labour government has reinstated to help with the rising cost of living.
Automatic Payments
No action is required from pensioners, as the payment will be made automatically. For those with incomes above the threshold, the amount will be recovered via HMRC. Households will receive £200, while those with someone over 80 will get £300.
Additional Support
Pensioners may also qualify for the Christmas Bonus, worth £10, and the Warm Home Discount of £150. Furthermore, over 12 million pensioners will benefit from the Triple Lock, with state pensions increasing by up to £1,900 over this parliament.
Recovery and Opt-Out
Retirees earning above £35,000 will have the full Winter Fuel Payment recovered through PAYE or Self-Assessment. Those who wish to opt out can do so. The DWP states that eligibility requires reaching state pension age by the end of the qualifying week.
