Hyndburn Mourns the Loss of Former Councillor Marlene Haworth
This past week, the community of Hyndburn came together to bid farewell to former councillor Marlene Haworth, whose funeral was held with deep respect and affection. Marlene served St Oswald's Ward with unwavering passion and dedication, and her contributions extended far beyond her local duties. She held the prestigious roles of mayor and leader of the council, earning widespread respect across the council chamber and throughout the entire borough. Her decades of fantastic work have left an indelible mark on the area.
Marlene was not merely a councillor or a colleague; she was a cherished friend, a mentor, and a surrogate mother to many. Personally, she provided invaluable support during the loss of my own mother, and my thoughts remain with her family and all who knew and loved her. She will be truly missed by everyone whose lives she touched.
Community Engagement and Civic Duties in Full Swing
Amidst these moments of reflection, civic duties across the borough have continued with inspiring energy. I had the absolute pleasure of setting off all the walkers who gathered for the RSPCA Lancashire East charity walk. This event highlights a critical issue: our local RSPCA branch is on the verge of closing, which could lead to job and volunteer losses and, more importantly, displace many animals. The RSPCA urgently needs help raising funds to keep the branch operational. If you can volunteer or donate, please consider visiting their page to support in any way possible.
Additionally, I enjoyed attending the Creative Wellbeing Networking event at The Stables at Elmfield Hall and a wonderful musical afternoon at Trinity Methodist Church. Both events showcased how creativity and community go hand in hand, fostering connections and well-being among residents.
Supporting Young People and Regional Partnerships
Engaging with our young people remains one of the most rewarding aspects of my role. I was delighted to join Broadway School for a radio show interview, where pupils quizzed me about becoming Mayor and the responsibilities involved. Their enthusiasm and thoughtful questions were a true credit to the school. Furthermore, I had the privilege of attending Hyndburn Academy's Iftar, an incredibly welcoming and educational evening that celebrated faith, understanding, and community cohesion.
It has also been a pleasure to support fellow civic leaders across Lancashire. I attended Longridge Town Council's Mayor's Charity Quiz, Clitheroe Town Council's Civic Sunday, the Mayor of Blackburn's Charity Ball, and the Mayor of Chorley's Burns Night. These events serve as a reminder of the strong partnerships we share across our region, enhancing collaboration and mutual support.
Upcoming Charity Ball to Support Local Causes
Finally, a quick reminder that tickets are still available for my Charity Ball on Friday, April 10. All funds raised will go towards my chosen charities, which do amazing work in the borough. These include supporting our veterans, paving the way for the next generation, addressing men's mental health, and delivering valued community events. So, please grab your tuxedos and ball gowns, and join us for a fantastic three-course meal and an evening of entertainment, all in aid of wonderful local causes.
