On this day in 1587, Mary, Queen of Scots, was formally deposed after rebellious Scottish nobles deserted her army at Carberry Hill and forced her to abdicate in favour of her one-year-old son, James. The event marked a pivotal moment in Scottish history, leading to a regency and eventually to James VI's accession to the English throne as James I.
