Last week, Mike Tapp MP welcomed a group of young people from across Dover and Deal to Parliament for his first Tapp into Politics Summer School. The event followed a year of school visits and debates with students on key national issues, and aimed to bring that enthusiasm into the heart of British democracy.
Two Days of Insight and Inspiration
The Summer School brought together young people aged 16 to 19 to experience first-hand what it is like to work in and around Parliament. Participants gained insight into the role of an MP, learning about responsibilities in Westminster and the constituency. They also spent time with Tapp's team, who explained daily work supporting constituents, from accessing public services to resolving complex casework.
Exploring Democratic Institutions
The group heard from various people playing important roles in democratic institutions, broadening their understanding of how Parliament functions beyond the Chamber. Tapp said, 'I hope these sessions demonstrated that our democracy relies on people from many different backgrounds and professions working together to serve the public.'
Engaging with the Next Generation
One highlight for Tapp was spending time with the participants. 'They asked thoughtful questions, challenged ideas, and shared their own perspectives on the issues that matter most to them. It was genuinely fascinating to engage with such an enthusiastic and informed group, and their curiosity and willingness to debate gave me great confidence in the next generation.'
Breaking Down Barriers
Since his election, Tapp has been passionate about creating opportunities for local young people to broaden their horizons. 'Politics can often feel distant, particularly for those who have never had the chance to visit Parliament, but programmes like this help break down those barriers and show that anyone can play a part in shaping our country's future.'
Looking Ahead
The success of this year's Summer School has strengthened Tapp's belief in the importance of such opportunities. He thanked all participants, his team, and speakers who contributed to the programme.
