Walsall Council Leader Horrified as Civic Centre Stripped Bare
Walsall Council Leader Horrified by Civic Centre Damage

The new leader of Walsall Council has expressed shock and dismay after discovering that the former One Stop Shop at the Civic Centre has been completely gutted. Councillor Elaine Williams described the area as 'vandalised' following its closure during the pandemic.

Extensive Damage Found

During a recent visit, Councillor Williams found that furniture, air conditioning units, flooring, and ceiling tiles had all been removed. Electrical wires were left hanging throughout the space, leaving it in a state she described as 'absolutely shocking'.

Reform UK, which now leads the council after last month's elections, had promised during its campaign to reopen the Civic Centre to the public. Councillor Williams noted that if the building had been left intact, reopening would have required only a 'lick of paint' and relocating staff from other parts of the building.

Community Reaction

'It looks like downstairs has been vandalised,' Councillor Williams said. 'This building belongs to the residents of Walsall. Nobody was consulted on this. We believed it was still in a similar state as when it shut, but to see it as a shell with electrical wires hanging down – I'm horrified.'

Since closing the Civic Centre, Walsall Council has opened 29 Connected centres across the borough where residents can access council services in person. Despite this, calls to reopen the Civic Centre have persisted.

In September 2025, former Blakenall councillor Pete Smith urged the council to either reopen the One Stop Shop or sell it and reinvest the funds elsewhere.

Upcoming Council Debate

The issue will be discussed at a full council meeting on Monday, June 22, where deputy leader of Walsall Community Independents, Councillor Khizar Hussain, will ask Reform leaders about their plans for reopening the site. Walsall Council has declined to comment ahead of the meeting.
