Aldi Issues Warning on Milk Fridge Storage

Aldi has issued a warning to shoppers about storing milk in the fridge, revealing that it can actually last longer if placed elsewhere. In general, milk is not known for a spectacular shelf life, but the budget supermarket, which opened its first UK store in Stechford, Birmingham in the 1990s, is here to help.

Aldi, competing with Tesco, Lidl, Morrisons, Asda, and Sainsbury's, has partnered with food waste expert Kate Hall to remind shoppers how to maximize milk's shelf life.

Hall explained: "If you find your milk goes sour before you can use it, try storing it in the middle of the fridge instead of the door. It's much colder here and can last up to three days longer!"

Tips to Avoid Waste

To prevent leaks, Hall suggests pouring half the milk into a reusable water bottle to lay flat. For longer storage, she recommends freezing milk flat in a sealable freezer bag in usable quantities, which can be defrosted quickly in cold water.

Some plant milks are also suitable for freezing, but always check the packaging first.

Hall added: "Remember: if milk smells sour, don't drink it. It is sometimes drinkable after its use-by date, but it can also go off before the date if not stored properly."

Using Sour Milk

If milk has gone sour, it can still be used in baking, as the heat of the oven kills potential pathogens. Experts from WRAP suggest artificially souring milk with vinegar or lemon juice as a substitute for buttermilk.

Speaking to the BBC, WRAP experts urged UK households: "No need if you have some milk past its best: use it in buttermilk scones, soda bread, or cobbler topping."
