A Birmingham teenager has been charged in connection with a series of gold chain snatch robberies in Coventry. Saidou Barry, 18, from St Saviours Road in Saltley, appeared before magistrates in Coventry on Friday, May 15, after being charged by West Midlands Police.
The force described the incidents as robberies of gold chains from two individuals in the city. Barry has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Warwick Crown Court on June 12.
Police Urge Vigilance
In light of the upcoming summer season, West Midlands Police have issued a reminder for the public to remain vigilant. A spokesperson stated: "With summer nearly here, we're reminding everyone to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings when out and about. Thieves often use the warmer weather as an opportunity to steal from people, vehicles, and homes."
Safety Advice from Police
The force has previously released guidance on how to protect oneself from street robbery. Key tips include:
- Look confident. You are less likely to be targeted if you appear confident. Move with purpose and stay aware of your surroundings.
- Know where you are going. Plan your route and consider what to take with you, especially if visiting unfamiliar areas. Stick to busy, well-lit streets and walkways with CCTV coverage. Use only licensed taxis or minicabs booked via phone or app.
- Hide valuables. Keep mobile phones and other valuables out of sight. Using a phone in public makes it an easy target, so remain alert. Never leave phones, wallets, or purses on outdoor café or restaurant tables. Similarly, keep jewellery covered while walking.
- Prioritise personal safety. If threatened with violence, do not risk your safety. Property can be replaced, but you cannot.
These steps, police emphasise, are crucial to reducing the risk of becoming a victim of robbery, especially during warmer months when more people are outdoors.
